If you want to use the = sign within the text, you must explicitly assign the variables "1" and "2", which represent the first text and the second text respectively. So for example, {{sbs|1=This piece of text has an = sign in it|2=This piece of text also has an = sign in it}} comes out as:

This piece of text has an = sign in it   This piece of text also has an = sign in it
