Lyndon Baines Johnson (August 27, 1908 – January 22, 1973) was the 36th President of the United States, inaugurated following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He greatly expanded the welfare/warfare state in the United States through escalation of the Vietnam War and his "Great Society" legislation that included "War on Poverty" programs.
