Parameters are as follows:

  • year (and optionally date) of the article
  • author
  • coauthors
  • title
  • url of the article
    • accessdate for the above URL (not generally used)
  • journal
  • url
  • issn
  • doi
  • volume
  • issue
  • page
  • passage
  • quotee
  • translation
  • transliteration

All parameters can contain in-line interwiki or external links, as needed.

Cut and paste

{{cite journal |year= |date= |author= |title= |journal= |url= |page=
|passage=}}

In addition, the template can be used without any named parameters, as follows:

{{cite journal|yyyy|author|title|journal|url|page
|passage}}

However, this will not work as advertised if any of the parameters contains an "=" sign. Any parameter containing an equals sign must be labeled (url=http://foo.com?id=bar)
