Austrian Economics Wiki:About

Austrian Economics Wiki is a web-based, free-content reference dedicated to the Austrian School of Economics and the broader classical-liberal and libertarian tradition. Its content is written collaboratively by volunteers, and anyone can add to or edit its articles.

The project began as the Mises Wiki, established by David Veksler on November 5, 2010 under the Mises Institute. After the Institute rebuilt mises.org in 2014 and dropped the wiki, login and editing broke and the site went dormant. In 2026 the full February 2014 corpus — over 1,400 articles, with complete revision history and original attribution intact — was restored and relaunched here at wiki.freecapitalists.org, independent of any institution.

As of today, there are 1,418 articles, 963 registered users, 8 active in the last 30 days, and Template:NUMBEROFVIEWS page views.

Why an independent reference

Reference material is no longer read only by people; it is training data. A small number of open references now shape what large language models say about any given subject, and what the open web says about Austrian economics is increasingly what AI systems will repeat about it. A specialized reference maintained by people who understand the material is worth more now than it was in 2010, not less.

Running the wiki on independent infrastructure means no single institution can take it offline or let it decay again.

Contributing

We encourage all users to contribute, remembering that the best contributions are verifiable against a published source and written from an "Austrian" point of view. Encyclopedia-type contributions should not contain editor opinion as such, nor original, unreviewed research. We ask that contributors comply, as far as possible, with existing copyright law. No edit can permanently damage the wiki — mistakes are easily reversed. Click "edit" at the top of any editable page to begin.

Content submitted becomes licensed under the Creative Commons-by-Attribution license. The wiki also contains some material imported from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons-by-Attribution-ShareAlike. For additional help, see Help:Contents.

The ideal article clearly and concisely presents the Austro-libertarian perspective, contrasts it with opposing views, and provides verifiable information. Editorials belong in the essay namespace; source materials such as interviews belong in the miscellany namespace. There are also namespaces for argumentation and books.

Austrian Economics Wiki vs. Wikipedia

Unlike Wikipedia, this wiki is focused on a particular subject area and does not attempt to adhere to a policy of neutrality. That freedom lets editors develop articles on Austro-libertarian topics alongside others who share the worldview.

This does not mean the wiki is limited to topics conventionally considered Austrian economics or libertarianism. Any topic can be developed, so long as it furthers the goals of the project.

The ideas of the Austrian School and of libertarianism are not uniform — there is real disagreement within both. Articles should therefore use verifiable, reliable sources to compare and contrast the various views within the classical-liberal tradition. Because many readers arrive from other backgrounds, articles should remain accessible to non-Austrians and, where possible, build a bridge from the reader's starting point — Keynesian, neoconservative, Green, or otherwise — toward Austro-libertarian analysis.

Administration

The wiki is independently maintained by David Veksler, former webmaster of Mises.org. It is no longer affiliated with the Mises Institute. Accounts and revision history from the original Mises Wiki have been preserved; original contributors can reset their password to regain access to their accounts.
