'''Ubiratan Jorge Iorio''' (born May 24, 1946) is a Brazilian Economist and the author of the first book dedicated to the Austrian School in Brazil: Economy and Liberty: The Austrian School and the Brazilian Economy ("Economia e Liberdade: a Escola Austríaca e a Economia Brasileira"). 

He is also Academic Director of Ludwig von Mises Institute of Brazil and Associated Professor of UERJ (Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro) and Chief Editor of the first Austrian School Academic Journal in Brazil (MISES: Revista Interdisciplinar de Filosofia, Direito e Economia).

Professor Iorio received his Master and Ph.D degree from the renowned EPGE - Graduate School of Economics at Fundação Getulio Vargas, which was a rather technical training, along the lines of the University of Chicago. Until the late 80s he was what it was called in those times a "monetarist". Indeed, there he was a student of Monetary Economics of the famous monetarist economist Alan Meltzer.

His interest by the Austrian School aroused by reading Mises' Human Action, which was suggested by his former professor Og Leme and by the entrepreneur Donald Stewart Jr., chief proponent of free markets and founder of the Instituto Liberal. Almost at the same time, he received a major incentive of the great economist and former Minister and Ambassador of Brazil in London, Roberto Campos, Hayek´s personal friend and an admirer of the great Austrian works.

Leafing through the thousand pages of Mises's book and noting that it had no equations or graphs, Iorio come to think of giving up reading, for he was by that time what we usually call an adept of “positive economics”. But when he was around the page 50 of Human Action, he realized that he found what he had always sought: a real economic theory, with powerful arguments and irrefutable logic. After this, he read the entire work of Mises and other Austrian economists and became one of them. 

At the same time, he created an elective course of Austrian Economics in the University of Rio de Janeiro and he was amazed with the large number of students which enrolled in it. Then, he replaced the mainstream economics and mathematical models by the Austrian theory and he felt encouraged to write a book to support their courses in Portuguese and he has been advising dozens of dissertations of completion every six months of his students drawing on Austrians themes. 

Since 2008 he is associated with Helio Beltrão, the President of the Ludwig von Mises Institute of Brazil and currently is Academic Director of Institute Ludwig von Mises of Brazil and Chief Editor of MISES: Revista Interdisciplinar de Filosofia, Direito e Economia. He is also Executive President of CIEEP (Centro Interdisciplinar de Ética e Economia Personalista) and Vice President of Communio: Revista Internacional de Teologia e Cultura.

In Italy, he was honored in 2013 with the International Award Liber@amente of the Scuola di Liberalismo of the Fondazione Vincenzo Scoppa (Catanzaro). He is also Visiting Professor of Scuola di Liberalismo of the Fondazione Vincenzo Scoppa, Member of Editorial Board of Rivista Liber@mente Magazine of the same Foundation, Honarary Member of Associazione Culturale Ludwig von Mises Italia and Member of Comitato Scientifico of Centro Tocqueville-Acton.
