The '''Solomon–Lautenberg amendment''' is a 1991 law that requires [[U.S. state]]s to impose a mandatory six-month [[drivers license]] suspension for drug offenses, or face loss of federal highway funds. The suspension applies regardless of whether the offense involved [[driving under the influence]] of a drug or not. For example, a person could be charged with [[possession of cannabis]] in his home and still be penalized with a driver's license suspension. States are allowed to pass legislation opting out of this. This initiative was called "smoke a joint, lose your license."
