== Why an independent reference ==

Reference material is no longer read only by people; it is training data. A small number of open references now shape what large language models say about any given subject, and what the open web says about Austrian economics is increasingly what AI systems will repeat about it. A specialized reference maintained by people who understand the material is worth more now than it was in 2010, not less.

Running the wiki on independent infrastructure means no single institution can take it offline or let it decay again.

Encyclopedia-type contributions should not contain editor opinion as such, nor original, unreviewed research. == Austrian Economics Wiki vs. Wikipedia ==

Unlike Wikipedia, this wiki is focused on a particular subject area and does not attempt to adhere to a policy of neutrality. That freedom lets editors develop articles on Austro-libertarian topics alongside others who share the worldview.

This does not mean the wiki is ''limited'' to topics conventionally considered Austrian economics or libertarianism. Any topic can be developed, so long as it furthers the goals of the project.

The ideas of the Austrian School and of libertarianism are not uniform — there is real disagreement within both. Articles should therefore use verifiable, reliable sources to compare and contrast the various views within the classical-liberal tradition. Because many readers arrive from other backgrounds, articles should remain accessible to non-Austrians and, where possible, build a bridge from the reader's starting point — Keynesian, neoconservative, Green, or otherwise — toward Austro-libertarian analysis.

==Governance==
Wikipedia is owned by the Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in Florida in 2003 (and still governed by Florida law), and headquartered in San Francisco, California. It is led by a ten-member board of trustees, three of which are community-elected, two of which are selected by chapters, one is a board-appointed "community founder" seat occupied by Jimbo Wales, and four are board-appointed "specific expertise" seats. The rationale for an Internet-focused organization having chapters has always been suspect, but the WMF claims they are useful for negotiating moral and financial partnerships, setting up Wikipedia parties, communicating with the press in the local language, etc.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Local_chapter_FAQ#What_is_the_point_of_having_chapters.3F|title=What is the point of having chapters?|publisher=Wikimedia Foundation}}</ref> Participation in the chapter selection of WMF board seats is limited to members of chapter boards. Some of the major Wikipedias have a community-elected Arbitration Community that serves as a court of final appeal on matters such as conduct disputes, blocks and bans, removal of administrative tools, and granting and removal of CheckUser and Oversight tools. The ArbCom also sometimes decides matters involving child protection, mental health problems, suicide threats, defamation, certain kinds of real life harassment, or other situations in which privacy and legal concerns prevent open discussion on-wiki. Usually no rationale for these decisions is published to the community. Decisions on Wikipedia that fall outside the purview of the ArbCom are generally made by "rough consensus," a rather nebulous term referring to some sort of supermajority. Early in Wikipedia's history, these were called "votes for deletion," but the terminology was changed to "articles for deletion" to emphasize that the strength of arguments, rather than number of votes in favor, is what counts the most in these discussions. This would seem to be contradictory to the concept of decision-making by rough consensus, unless the rough consensus in question was that which established a particular deletion policy. Even then, the policies are vague enough that some discretion must be left to participants in individual deletion debates, unless a higher authority is to be allowed to decide. Policies can be changed by direct edits to the pages that no one reverts, or they can be made by formal proposal. Formal proposals tend to have a very low pass rate.

Wikipedia has sysops who have power to protect and delete pages, block users, and perform other administrative functions. Wikipedia also has bureaucrats who have power to promote to sysop those users who receive approximately 80% support in a weeklong discussion. Because Wikipedia is structured as a democratic republic, it suffers many of the same governance problems as other [[democracies]]. The bulk of the community has, however, repeatedly rejected proposals for commercialization.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commercialization|title=Commercialization|author=Meta-Wiki}}</ref> Commercialization would create a profit motive and eliminate the one-man one-vote system, replacing it with an [[investor democracy]] instead in which those who buy more shares can cast plural votes. Those with the ability to make such stock purchases would, for the most part, be those whose who have demonstrated skill and insight in the financial marketplace, in business management, and in general efficiently providing products that customers value.

==Neutrality or lack thereof==
Wikipedia claims to adhere to a "neutral point of view" policy. However, it would be more accurate to say that it follows a [[majoritarian]] policy: "Wikipedia should not present a dispute as if a view held by a small minority deserved as much attention overall as the majority view."<ref>[[w:Wikipedia:Neutral point of view#Due_and_undue_weight]]</ref> Thus, for example, a section on [[Austrian economic]] perspectives concerning the article's subject might not receive as much space or prominence in an article as a more mainstream [[Keynes]]ian viewpoint. If an editor attempts to write an article on "Austrian perspectives on x," that may be deleted as a "point of view fork."<ref>[[w:Wikipedia:Content forking#POV_forks]]</ref>

Wikipedia's editor base probably consists of a greater proportion of academics than the general population. University students tend to make frequent reference to Wikipedia as a place to gain an overview of a subject and find leads to other sources of information, and some of them are assigned by their professors to edit Wikipedia articles. Those with access to academic databases have an advantage at editing Wikipedia articles, because such resources are likely to be regarded as reliable sources.<ref>[[w:Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources]]</ref> Any content that is not deemed to be "reliably sourced" is subject to removal, even if the material is true.<ref>[[w:Wikipedia:Verifiability]]</ref>

Wikipedia's editor demographics are probably the reason why the political bias of its articles tends to be slightly leftist-leaning. However, it also means that Wikipedia tends to have a greater proportion of Austrian economists among its editor base than one would expect from an extrapolation from the generic population. [[Mises Wiki]] was created partly to allow editors to create content without worrying about the cumbersomely voluminous rules and procedures; "neutral point of view" expectations; and editors and sysops who may be (overtly or covertly) hostile to Austrian economics and therefore attempt to manipulate the system to eliminate Austrian-sympathetic content, and possibly even Austrian-sympathetic editors, from the wiki.

In a situation of [[mob rule]], the "rough consensus" of editors is in a position to call content it dislikes "biased," or selectively enforce or otherwise misuse rules to suit its agenda. As in other democracies, a vocal and dedicated minority can sometimes prevail over a relatively disinterested or distracted majority. Editing and conduct disputes can become complex, and many editors engage in [[rational ignorance]] rather than invest the time needed to sort out the facts. The usual problem applies that, just as the hardest-working citizens in a democracy may be too busy to pay much attention to politics, the most productive editors may be precisely those who have a distaste for getting involved in group decision-making processes.

==Comparison to other wikis and to politics==
Wikipedia could be considered a more inherently collectivist system than, say, MediaWiki.org. At the latter, users are allowed to create and distribute whatever extensions, patches, etc. they wish, as long as potential downloaders are warned of its instability, security flaws, etc.

There are several dozen hooks that enable developers to customize the functioning of the software how they wish.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Hooks|title=Manual:Hooks|publisher=MediaWiki.org}}</ref> If two developers disagree on how an extension should be coded, they can fork the code. It is not necessary to reach consensus. Moreover, the functionality of an extension can be quite minimal or even frivolous without putting it in danger of deletion.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Awesomeness|title=Extension:Awesomeness|publisher=MediaWiki.org}}</ref> Part of the idea is that even a useless extension can serve to teach other developers how to code, and a simple extension can later be enhanced by other developers.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Simple_extensions#Extensions|title=Simple extensions|publisher=MediaWiki.org}}</ref>

In contrast, at Wikipedia, only one version of an article is allowed to be the current revision. And if users feel that an article is not useful, they can seek its deletion. It is assumed that the community can exercise enough wisdom to tell articles with potential from articles without, and that the benefits of empowering supermajorities to delete articles outweighs the advantages of leaving the articles there for someone to improve later.

This is much like how, in a communist society, the dictator or electorate can decree that any business be closed so that resources can be devoted elsewhere; the person who took the initiative in founding and operating the business has no greater say than anyone else, despite his greater familiarity with the subject matter. Furthermore, it is not always true that labor freed from a business (or article) that is forcibly abolished will automatically flow into the channels that other members of society would like it to. Sometimes the individual can become too discouraged or angry at such a turn of events to put forth his full effort at something else. Or his labor may not be a fully [[convertible resource]].

The only area on Wikipedia that a user is deemed to have something akin to an ownership interest is his own userspace, but even this can be abrogated if those in power (e.g. the masses voting at Miscellany for Deletion) take offense.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion|title=Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion|publisher=Wikipedia}}</ref> It is assumed that giving users too much autonomy to devote resources to their userspace will detract from encyclopedia-building. This is the same reasoning sometimes used against allowing people to opt out of public school taxes and instead purchase education from private schools. People fear that this will hurt educational options for the poor, when actually it will help it. Freedom enhances incentives to be a part of that community and to invest in it, which benefits everyone.

It is possible that, much as there was a [[brain drain]] from communist countries to the freer West, Wikipedia is experiencing a similar phenomenon. Perhaps some users are fleeing unfavorable conditions for the freer world of the blogosphere or friendlier portions of the wikisphere, where they can be more productive. There are many outlets available for self-expression, and it appears many people have decided that the advantages of secession (e.g. by exporting Wikipedia articles and importing them into one's own wiki, and getting some Wikipedia editors to divert their activities away from Wikipedia to work on those smaller wikis) outweigh the disadvantages of being a part of that large but oppressively and arbitrarily regulated community.

A large enough secessionist effort can be successful, an example being the Enciclopedia Libre Universal.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-01/20/wikipedia-spanish-fork?page=all|title=The Spanish Fork: Wikipedia's ad-fuelled mutiny|author=Nathaniel Tkacz|date=20 January 11|publisher=Wired}}</ref> It is also possible for small secessionist groups to engage in trade with one another, and even with those they seceded from, without being completely governed by them. For example, Wikipedia and Mises Wiki having compatible licenses, each can borrow from the other while remaining independent.

I've made the necessary adjustments to [[Template:Header]] and [[MediaWiki:Common.css]]. The headers are now working on subpages; if you don't see them try refreshing the page a few times. Some notes:
*I removed the header from the article page. My rationale for this is that the main page ([[Practical Anarchy]], in this case) should look like an encyclopedia article, because that's really what it is – it's the page to describe the book, talk about reaction, provide external links, etc. The subpages, however, are where navigation between chapters needs to be possible, so that's where the header makes sense.

Several wikis and wiki farms ostensibly promote a "neutral point of view" in their encyclopedias. Sometimes wikis are launched as a reaction to their points of views not being allowed free expression on other wikis. For example, many conservative, Young Earth Creationist editors who didn't get along with the leaders of Conservapedia went to Ameriwiki,<ref>http://ameriwiki.org/</ref> while many other (mostly non-Christian) editors banned from Conservapedia went to RationalWiki. Some sites, such as BoyWiki/NewgonWiki and Metapedia, cater to very specific editor populations that are typically ''persona non grata'', and whose views are typically suppressed, virtually everywhere else in the wikisphere.

RationalWiki is a site whose stated purpose consists of analyzing and refuting [[pseudoscience]] and the [[Antiscience|anti-science]] movement; documenting the full range of [[Crank (person)|crank]] ideas; explorations of [[authoritarianism]] and [[fundamentalism]]; and analysis and criticism of how these subjects are handled in the media. The site's unwillingness to adopt unpopular positions that are supported by facts and logic, or even in some cases to engage in argumentation about the factual and logical issues at hand, could be accurately described as [[pseudoskeptical]]. It is also noteworthy that, when the editors encounter a portion of an edit that they disagree with, they will often perform a wholesale revert (typically without providing any explanation), including eliminating proven and relevant facts, rather than reverting selectively. Restoring the facts is then considered disruptive edit-warring.

In some cases, RationalWikians deem a topic too controversial for discussion from every possible angle, and only allow one viewpoint, or a narrow range of viewpoints, on the matter to be expressed on the site. The list of forbidden viewpoints is not codified in any policy, but rather is decided on an ad hoc basis. Users who transgress these unwritten bounds are subject to being banned without warning, and those who attempt to debate whether the banning or the suppression of the opposing viewpoint were proper are also subject to being banned. This allows the elected moderators who do the banning to exercise a significant amount of control over their electorate, by ejecting dissidents from it and stifling criticism of moderation decisions.

The [[burden of proof]] in argumentation is generally placed on the person who wishes to challenge the community consensus opinions currently expressed in RationalWiki's articles, rather than on the person who argues for constraining individual liberty in society. If a person wishes to challenge an opinion strongly felt by RationalWiki editors, then he is expected to provide "extraordinary evidence" from a source that the community deems acceptable; however, even credentialed sources (such as university professors) are deemed disqualified to express a credible opinion if their opinion differs from the RationalWiki community's. Those professionals are viewed as "crackpots," and the [[lay scholar]]s who adhere to those same dissident views are "quacks," regardless of what evidence they might put forth.

Users sometimes point out that for a site called "RationalWiki," its commitment to reasonable argumentation appears shaky at best. RationalWikians respond by refuting a straw man argument that anyone who disagrees with crank opinions must not be "rational." Actually, in many cases what users take issue with concerning RationalWiki is not necessarily the ''conclusions'' reached through argumentation but the employment of flawed logic to reach those conclusions. Reasonable people can and do disagree about which arguments concerning a given topic are supported by a preponderance of evidence. But disputes concerning logic are more clear-cut; the rules of logic and the methods of logical argumentation are well-established, and there is little excuse to persist in fallacious reasoning when it has been exposed as such.

The fact that the RationalWiki community often condones such faulty argumentation by allowing articles to continue reflecting those flawed lines of reasoning is why many users find the site's name ironic. In some cases, users even admit that they are abandoning reason in favor of emotion, and do not see a problem with this. As Mises pointed out, this sort of approach is problematic; he warns, "If man reconsiders freeing himself from the supremacy of reason, he must know what he will have to forsake."<ref>{{cite book|title=Human Action|author=Mises, Ludwig von|url=http://mises.org/humanaction/chap3sec6.asp|chapter=The Case for Reason}}</ref>

A great deal of joking and pranking occurs on RationalWiki, and the site adheres to a "snarky point of view" policy.<ref>http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/RationalWiki:SPOV</ref> It is difficult to say whether RationalWiki is primarily a joke wiki with some serious content or vice versa. Despite all of its flaws, RationalWiki is notable for its unusual practice of promoting almost all editors to sysop status. This produces greater transparency by enabling most editors to view deleted articles. It also produces a more egalitarian atmosphere than is seen on typical wikis, since most RationalWiki editors are able to exercise sysop functions such as blocking users, and to revert sysop actions taken by others.

RationalWikiWiki was created on 27 December 2007 supposedly to critique, and often mock, the many missteps made by the RationalWiki community.<ref>http://rationalwikiwiki.org/</ref> However, that site tends to be no more tolerant of divergent thought than RationalWiki itself, and editors can be blocked for contesting conventional wisdom on certain issues. For this reason, several RationalWikiWikiWikis have been set up over the years, although most stagnated. The most recent RationalWikiWikiWiki, created to provide a venue for discussions deemed too controversial for RationalWiki, lasted from 1 September to 11 September 2012, when it was shut down after an RWW user's report to the Provo, Utah-based webhost resulted in a terms of service warning demanding that text containing "adult content" (viz., polemics concerning sex law reform and the harmfulness, or lack thereof, of certain sexual conduct) be removed within 48 hours. This was deemed to require abandoning the site's goal because the terms of service specified prohibited content in terms so nebulous as to make it impossible to know whether one was in violation or not, if even political expression were to be declared too racy.

The RWW user who made the report described the RWWW site owner as "morally bankrupt" and stated, "I do not believe in 'freedom of speech', when it could be used against the innocent", a reference to the perceived need to protect [[minor]]s not only by forcibly preventing them from implementing their own decisions concerning use of their own bodies, but by suppressing any speech that would oppose the laws authorizing and mandating such government intervention. This argument for censorship ignored the fact that the point of a discussion concerning ethics is to determine what is right and wrong, and therefore who is innocent or guilty of wrongdoing. Arguably, if a proscribed behavior should not be proscribed, and if the free expression of opinions is necessary to repeal that proscription, then the suppression of speech is harmful to the innocent. One method of determining what should or should not be proscribed is reasoned argumentation, in which each side has an opportunity to fully present its views, critique opposing viewpoints, critique opponents' critiques of its own viewpoints, etc. This interaction among people who disagree is often more productive than merely setting up echo chambers that allow like-minded people to express agreement with one another's beliefs.

Some RWW users had also criticized the RWWW site owner for using a [[Creative Commons|CC-by-SA]]-licensed image from their site without their permission and for giving the site a name that was a derivative of RationalWikiWiki's. They complained that this was inappropriate since the site was used for the voicing of opinions not representative of the views of RWW editors. The irony of a site whose own name was a derivative of "RationalWiki," and which devoted itself to critiquing and mocking that wiki, complaining about another site doing the same to it, seemed to escape them, as did the fact that the creation of an independent wiki for the purpose of ''agreeing'' with RWW would be pointless. The necessity of a fork arises when there are irreconcilable disagreements about site policy or content, and someone wants to break free of the restrictions imposed by those in control of a wiki by establishing a new wiki.

Furthermore, there is a long history of organizations critical of other organizations or movements incorporating the name of the criticized organizations or movements in their own names. Examples would include Wikipedia Review, Right Wing Watch, School of the Americas Watch, and so on. Such names help the reader by making it immediately evident to him what organization or movement the group is devoted to criticizing. In the wake of the RW and RWW users' refusing to debate the RWWW users in any debate forum, under any set of rules, with any moderator, under any circumstances, on certain subjects of controversy; and the RW and RWW users' efforts to suppress expression of dissident viewpoints on not only their own sites but on other sites; the RWWWians declared victory, noting that their opponents had effectively [[forfeiture of debate|forfeited]]. However, they left the RWWW site in place as a memorial to the achievement. On 15 September 2012, the site was resurrected at NearlyFreeSpeech.NET, a [[free speech webhost]]; due to NFSN's technical difficulties and limitations, the site was subsequently moved on 22 September 2012 to DreamHost.

Another site, RationalWikiWikiWikisWiki, provides commentary and meta-meta-meta-analysis on the various RationalWikiWikiWikis, past and present.<ref>http://rationalwikiwikiwikiswiki.referata.com/wiki/List_of_RationalWikiWikiWikis</ref> Presently, there is only one RationalWikiWikiWiki remaining, so RationalWikiWikiWikisWiki's name is a bit of a misnomer.

Joke wikis include Uncyclopedia and Encyclopedia Dramatica. Wikis can serve a number of different purposes other than hosting encyclopedias; for example, wiki software can be used as a content management system for a blog. Such blogs are called "blikis."

==For-profit and nonprofit==
The only major for-profit wiki farm in the wikisphere is Wikia, run by Jimbo Wales. Wikia uses a forked version of MediaWiki that is not known to be in production use anywhere else. Much of Wikia's core community (the "civil society" of the wiki farm, as it were) was alienated by various policies that were imposed in a top-down manner. Wikia sites are covered with distracting advertisements, with a high ratio of screen devoted to advertising vs. screen space devoted to content.

Corporate or public relations wikis can sometimes be considered "for profit," in that they help the company either organize its activities (e.g. by assisting inter-employee communication) or provide information to the public. There are wikis owned by sole proprietors, but typically these operate at a loss. Usually the focus is more on mission than on profits.

==Governance==
Wikis, like any other website, are owned by some person or entity with a legal right to access to the server and therefore the ability to take control of the wiki. Some owners, such as Wikimedia Foundation, take a relatively hands-off approach, allowing their communities to operate as they see fit after the initial structure and culture has been established. Sanger's Law, so-named because of a comment made by [[Larry Sanger]] circa 2005,<ref>{{cite web|date=2005|quote=[P]rovisional 'hands off' management policy had the effect of creating a difficult-to-change tradition . . . Those users who are attracted to the existing culture join (and may even be given sysop powers) and help reinforce that culture. Those users who are repelled by the culture leave (or are banned) and no longer directly influence the site. This is especially true on sites such as Wikipedia whose policies and leaders are chosen by the community rather than by a corporate or nonprofit CEO and his staff.

Mass hysterias sometimes sweep across wikis. On RationalWiki, this is referred to as "headless chicken mode."<ref>http://rationalwikiwiki.org/wiki/Headless_Chicken_Mode</ref> Much as in off-wiki governments, existing laws can be difficult to get off the books, but an impassioned debate leading to reform may be spurred by some incident that catches people's attention and prompts an emotional response. It's probably possible to automate this. The code to automate a simple bulleted list of the newest articles is already available, and I've deployed it on several of my wikis; see [[mw:Extension:Recent Pages]]. However, I think we would want more advanced functionality; specifically, the first sentence of the article should be displayed, much like what we have made available manually at [[:Template:New articles]]. What I have in mind is an extension to go through each of the new pages and search for and display that first sentence:
*Skip past all opening templates (e.g. infoboxes).
*A cue that the sentence is over would be a punctuation mark followed by a whitespace character.
*Wikilink the first item that is bolded in that first sentence; that's the page title.
*If no suitable sentence is found, ignore that page.

:Unfortunately, it looks like it could be technically difficult. If you google around, you'll find that a lot of people have tried to tackle this, without finding a perfect solution. Supposedly we might be able to get the error rate down to .25% using [http://code.google.com/p/splitta/ Splitta] or [https://github.com/SlyShy/Tactful_Tokenizer Tactful Tokenizer] or the like. The problem was summed up: "There is no simple trick. To do this properly, you need to do a syntactic analysis of the text. Nobody can do that. At least not yet. At least not 100% of the time. Mainly because it also entails a semantic analysis of the text. You see, contrary to what the type of linguists that taught you grammar in school think, what makes up a sentence is pretty hard to sum up in a set of rules a computer could follow without understanding the text."

Also, I don't know whether this would be desirable or not, but since LvMI owns the backend for the entire site, it might be possible to create a MediaWiki extension that would integrate data from the Blog, Daily, and Resources, so that you would only need to put an ID in the template and it could populate the rest. :This page defines "classes" that make it easier to do common types of formatting. For just one example, about halfway down there's the "prettytable" class. It sets colors, borders and other things related to tables. As a result, it's easy to create a nice-looking table. Just type:

Has a firm decision been made that we should replace the Mises shield with this globe as our logo? If so, the image will need to be adapted for that purpose:
*The white background should be replaced with a transparent background.
*Implement whatever feathering or shadowing you deem appropriate, but make sure it fades out to a transparent rather than white background.
*Bear in mind that [http://wiki.mises.org/mediawiki/skins/misesskin/images/shield.png the shield] is an 146 x 126 pixel image, and a lot of that 146 pixels of width is just background. So I guess convert this image to another 146 x 126 image except with that globe in the middle instead of the shield. I would do it, but I'm no graphic designer.

To the right, you can see what it looked like when I tried using a version of this image to which I had applied [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75o7S1TjgWA these instructions] to get rid of the white background. The fuzzy select stopped when it got to the shadow, so you can still see some white around the edges. Also, the globe is significantly wider than the shield as well as of slightly greater height, since it's an 135 x 135 pixel image. So, you'll want to make it smaller than that, I presume, even though [[mw:Manual:$wgLogo]] specifies a logo size of 135 x 135 pixels.

In case you're interested, the way our system is set up, changes to the logo are made by editing <code>/home/web/public_html/wiki/mediawiki/skins/Vector.php</code> . There's a line that reads:

A different logo can be substituted by changing that filename from <code>shield.png</code> to something else. Unfortunately, that resulted in the "Wiki" item wrapping to the next line on smaller screens. So, I reverted it:

[[mw:MediaWiki 1.22|MediaWiki 1.22]] was released today. I think what we will do is upgrade to [[mw:MediaWiki 1.23|MediaWiki 1.23alpha]] and then upgrade all of the extensions to their latest development versions. That way, we'll have the most cutting-edge software, albeit at slightly greater risk of glitches. If we run into problems, in most cases those can be resolved by upgrading again to a version that fixes them. I'll try to find some workarounds for the problems we're having.

::Well, I don't mind re-abolishing Reviewspace if it's deemed unnecessary. The proliferation of spaces is inspired by RationalWiki, but that site seems a bit less serious-minded than this one. RW tends to establish site opinions by mobocracy, and they will put as headings "RationalWiki's response", forming a united front as it were against the opposition. The downside is that dissidents from the site's viewpoint are often dismissed rather blithely and harshly, and sometimes even suppressed entirely.

::So, maybe RW is not the best inspiration, given that their methods have resulted in a rather dysfunctional wiki, at least when it comes to constructive dialog and sincere truth-seeking. It's a popular site, but as Ayn Rand noted in a lot of her novels, what's popular and what's unpopular often constitute a sad commentary on the preferences of most people in our society. "On the lowest level, teachers can simply encourage students to use their works for the wiki. That way, their work won't be lost and can find a broad audience." This is very true; for example, I created [[w:Guarantee Security Life Insurance Company|the]] [[w:Government Accountability Office investigations of the Department of Defense|two articles]] with minimal adaptation from my original college papers. Some of my economics papers, I wish I had kept around so I could have added them to a wiki.

We could create a little handout for professors to give their students on how to convert their work into wikicode and add it to Mises Wiki. If the professor doesn't want to get too heavily involved, that could be a very simple and easy way to encourage participation in the wiki. I'll get to work on that at once.

I once had a college composition teacher tell the class that she would give a student a lot of extra credit if he could get any of his essays published in a newspaper. So it is not unheard-of to encourage such real-world submissions.

One question, though — suppose a student submits an article for a graded assignment. Suppose the article is incomplete (e.g. a stub), or written in atrocious style, and another editor fixes it. Then hasn't that editor deprived the student of the opportunity to fix it himself and get class credit for doing so? So maybe it is better to tell the students to first work on their article in userspace, and to put a notice at the top asking other editors to leave it alone until it's ready for mainspace. Of course, this diminishes the collaborative aspect, unless it is a group assignment. But editors could still make suggestions on the user talk page. So this is something I'd like to understand. As stated on this main project page, Mises Wiki content is released under [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported] license while Wikipedia is licensed under the [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported] license.

Now. The only difference between these two is that the latter requires any derivative works to be distributed under the same or a similar license. In other words, the content itself is freely copyable, distributable, and adaptable, but any new work created using it ''must also be'' made freely copyable, distributable, and adaptable. That's the whole point of the "share alike" provision.

This means that in the case of the Mises Wiki (as it does ''not'' have this provision), the content itself is freely copyable, distributable, and adaptable, but any derivative work made using this content falls under normal copyright law...meaning that anything anyone makes using content from our Mises Wiki, they have an intellectual monopoly on, and all they have to do is attribute the base work.

Some of our pages are imported from Wikipedia, so it's not really appropriate to have that icon at the bottom of those pages. I've thought that it might be good to create an extension that will change the copyright notice depending on how individual pages are licensed; I even filed [[bugzilla:16596|a bug]] along similar (although not identical) lines. I will get to work on this immediately, and see how practicable it is. I don't like to see pages not have any license notice at all, because then people might not realize they can copy our content without asking permission.

== Problems with Firefox? ==

Recently (i.e. for about the past week), when I have been attempting to view Mises Wiki using Firefox, it's either been displaying in a weird non-graphical (i.e. all-text) format or has been directing me to bastiat.mises.org or the "page not found" page (the one that says "Oops, that link appears to be incorrect..."). Or it says "Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete." That may be because for some reason Firefox keeps wanting to go to the https version rather than the http, even when I type http into the address bar. (Some links I have been trying include https://wiki.mises.org/wiki/Special:RecentChanges and https://wiki.mises.org/ .)

Not sure why that is; I tried using the http address with two different computers running Firefox, and it kept wanting to go to the https. Anyway, shouldn't it work with either? Some users might want to use the wiki more securely.

Try typing a nonexistent user subpage, say, User:YourUserName/TestPage into the searchbar. Then you get "There is currently no text in this page. You can search for this page title in other pages, search the related logs, or edit this page." Then click "search for this page title." It will then prompt, "Create the page "YourUserName/TestPage" on this wiki!" I.e., it will prompt you to create a mainspace page, when you had typed in a userspace page. A solution could be "[http://catb.org/jargon/html/D/Don-t-do-that-then-.html don't do that then]"; don't search for it, but rather click on "edit this page". Thrift institutions caught between high interest rates to their depositors and low rates earned on long-time mortgages, will increasingly become bankrupt or be forced into quasi-bankrupt mergers with other thrifts which will be dragged down by the new burdens. Even commercial banks, protected by the safety blanket of the FDIC for half a century, are now beginning to go down the drain, dragged down by their unsound loans of the past decade.

Matters are even worse on the international front. During the great credit boom, U.S. banks have recklessly loaned inflated dollars to unsound and highly risky governments and institutions abroad, especially in the Communist governments and the Third World. The Depository Control Act of 1980, which shows no signs of being repealed by the Reagan administration, allows the Federal Reserve to purchase unlimited amounts of foreign currency (or any other assets) or to lower bank reserve requirements to zero. In other words, it sets the stage for unlimited monetary and credit inflation by the Fed. The bailing out of the Polish government, and the refusal by the U.S. to declare it bankrupt so that the U.S. taxpayer (or holder of dollars) can pick up the tab indefinitely, is an omen for the future. For only massive inflation will eventually be able to bail out foreign debtors and U.S. creditor banks.

Since Friedmanite gradualism will not permit a sharp enough recession to clear out the debt, this means that the American economy will be increasingly faced with two alternatives: either a massive deflationary 1929-type depression to clear out the debt, or a massive inflationary bailout by the Federal Reserve. Hard money rhetoric or no rhetoric, the timidity and confusion of Reaganomics make very clear what its choice will be: massive inflation of money and credit, and hence the resumption of double-digit and perhaps higher inflation, which will drive interest rates even higher and prevent recovery. A Democratic administration may be expected to inflate with even more enthusiasm. We can look forward, therefore, not precisely to a 1929-type depression, but to an inflationary depression of massive proportions. Until then, the Austrian program of hard money, the gold standard, abolition of the Fed, and laissez-faire, will have been rejected by everyone: economists, politicians, and the public, as too harsh and Draconian. But Austrian policies are comfortable and moderate compared to the economic hell of permanent inflation, stagnation, high unemployment, and inflationary depression that Keynesians and Friedmanite neo-Keynesians have gotten us into. Perhaps, this present and future economic holocaust will cause the American public to turn away from failed nostrums and toward the analysis and policy conclusions of the Austrian School.

That seems to me very crucial for reasons I'll elaborate on further. But right after that he continues:

Looking on inflation of that period, (see [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US_Historical_Inflation.svg image] and in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US_Historical_Inflation.svg numbers]) we see inflation, as measured by the CPI, actually tapering off by 1981 and going down significantly by late 1982. Taking into account how unreliable and problematic [[CPI]] numbers are, it would seem that the "slam on the brakes" was actually performed by someone ([[Paul Volcker]]) and it may have actually worked in the end! So it looks like Rothbard missed this development and misjudged the public's reaction to the "remarkably high interest rates". ("The twin hallmarks of "Reaganomics" so far have been huge deficits and remarkably high interest rates.")

However, [[Wikipedia:Early 1980s recession#Recovery|WP says]] (confirmed by [http://data.bls.gov/pdq/SurveyOutputServlet BLS]) that unemployment reached its peak in December 1982 and that's when the recovery started, culminating around 1984 - which Rothbard wouldn't see at the time of writing.

It seems then that Rothbard missed the part about the massive inflation. The consequences has been still serious, however ([[Black Monday (1987)]], the slowly collapsing [[United States Savings & Loan crisis|S&Ls]], both followed by the '[[Wikipedia:Early 1990s recession|Early 1990s recession]]').

Firefox attempts to switch from http://wiki.mises.org to the https site, causing errors, such as redirection to the bastiat site or to the page not found site. [[David Veksler]] writes, "The latest Firefox just added [[w:SPDY|SPDY]] support, which I just enabled for Mises.org. It seems that the SPDY support in Firefox is somehow buggy in that it redirects to HTTPS without the user asking it to. It's also possible that the way CloudFlare implemented SPDY is buggy. (Though that seems unlikely, since it's browser specific.) Some parts of Mises.org do not support HTTPS, which causes 404s. I think Firefox will be patched shortly, in the meantime, we have to disable SPDY. I will continue to test periodically to see if it's fixed. I will also work on adding HTTPS/SSL support to all Mises.org domains/sites."

There seems to be some kind of block on files uploaded to the wiki. Even when you are logged in, going to a file page makes the wiki behave as though you are logged out.

For administrators, this means there are no tabs for moving or blocking or deleting the page. (This isn't too big of an issue, as those options appear if you first click the edit tab to move beyond the main file page).

However, this means no one, not even an admin, can upload a new version of a file. This is normally an option on a wiki if you are logged in.

== USA-centrism ==

I am wondering if we might consider aiming for a more global perspective in our developing articles. This has been occurring to me as I have been tinkering with [[Net neutrality]], a timely issue in the U.S. as of December 2010 but still with application elsewhere.

After all, at this writing we are billed as "A Global Repository". Further, in presenting praxeological truths that remain true regardless of location or era, a global approach--or at least acknowledgement--seems prudent and consistent.

Of course, I also recognize I can simply take this approach on my own whether or not anyone else "approves," and maybe it is mostly my eyes that have been slow to open, while perhaps most are already doing this. I thought I would at least put the idea out on the table for others' consideration.

Any of you non-USA folks care to chime in? Are readers of Mises Wiki as concentrated in the USA as we might think? Please feel free, all. -- [[User:RayBirks|RayBirks]] 15:58, 2 January 2011 (CST)
:Do you have specific suggestions on how to aim for this goal? In general I'd leave this to the discretion of the users, let them work on whatever they are interested in. A certain USA-centricity is probably unavoidable (speaking from Europe here). But if you want to make the thought more popular and maybe even coordinate the efforts, you could make an "International" WikiProject. There are even users thinking about writing in [http://wiki.mises.org/wiki/User_talk:Forgottenman#idioms different languages], so it could house them as well.

Just let whoever has the time and the inclination edit the wiki if they're from Europe great if not that's great too at least they're working on the project. Further, upon listening to [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR2LWUM8in8 this 25-minute video interview about the Mises Wiki], recorded in mid-December 2010, I was reminded how I have distanced myself from the Wikipedia project as I increasingly encountered editors who need some basic kindergarten people skills. Is it any wonder people draw back from editing, newcomers especially? To paraphrase [[Gresham's Law]]: Bad manners drive out good manners. Their chilling effect is unseen but powerful. I would like this community to champion an atmosphere of mutual respect and to more readily shun or exile those who cannot or will not do so. To continue the kindergarten analogy, I would say the problem is not so much that the kids lack the necessary social skills to play well with each other over on Wikipedia, as it is that the designated "adults" (sysops, ArbCom, etc. operating under the ultimate authority of the Board of Trustees) have either instigated or permitted the stifling of much productive activity, which has discouraged people from wanting to continue participating. Jimbo, who is analogous to the principal of the school, could have run it in a Montessori manner that gave the kids more liberty, while dealing firmly with those who sought to interfere with that liberty. Instead, he put in place a bunch of overly restrictive rules and invited the community to decide by "rough consensus" matters that really should have been left to individuals' discretion.

If you look at a kindergarten where all the kids are allowed to do what they want, as long as they don't hurt others, you'll see them exploring many different avenues (e.g. one may read a book, others may play hide and seek, others may build a tower with blocks). But tragically, there often comes a point at which the adults say "Put that away; it's time to study x now," or some group of bullies (typically operating with the support or acquiescence of most of the class members, and with the tolerance of the mostly-apathetic teacher) will interfere with someone enjoying himself and being productive in his own way. I am reminded of this passage from Ayn Rand's essay "The Comprachicos":

The Wikipedians are happy to express their insincere wikilove by delivering a plateful of virtual cookies to your talk page when you arrive, but they won't allow editors the freedom to [[w:Wikipedia:Don't demolish the house while it's still being built|build a house]] (i.e. an article) without subjecting it to the arbitrary judgment of the community on issues of notability and so on. If you try to post, say, a resume in your userpage giving useful background about yourself, they put that up for deletion too, saying it's a vanity page or spam. A lot of times, it just amounts to a popularity contest in which editors with unpopular opinions or independent styles are more likely to be assumed to have bad faith. If you express an opinion that maybe this isn't the best way to run an encyclopedia, they say "If you don't like it, the rest of the internet is that-a-way." And so, here we are.
